ACVB Donates Uniforms To Youth In Sao Filipe

Elton Fonseca, of ACVB's Palma Panthers, was in the Sao Filipe neighborhood in the capital city, Praia, Cabo Verde, to deliver uniforms for youths at the Associação Escola de Basquetebol SFB. Serving as the ACVB League Ambassador, Elton met with the President of the School Association (SFB), Bila Santos, to distribute the uniforms amongst its members and teams. Elton was on hand to hear the youth speak about their program and mission, and he also spoke and ran clinics with the youth.

Elton has also had workouts with the Cabo Verde National Team meeting up with national team veteran Michael Mendes of ACVB's AmiBasket and Fidel Mendonça, captain of the national team. The national team is currently training and preparing for competition in the African World Cup Qualifiers in a couple weeks. Cabo Verde faces Guinea in the first game of the second round (Group E) on Friday, August 26, 2022 at 1pm local time at the Palais Des Sports De Treichville in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.

The Associação Escola de Basquetebol SON FLIP BASKET (SFB) is a non-profit organization, based in Achada São Filipe, Praia, Cabo Verde. Since 2017, SFB has been working in the community with children, adolescents, and young people of both sexes, from ages 6 to 20 years old, in the developing of values ​​such as: respect, civility, team spirit, self-esteem, discipline among other "Soft Skills", through sports, specifically basketball. The SFB program is to acquire life skills and focuses on dealing with gender issues, violence, abusive use of alcohol and other drugs, leadership and building the modern man and woman. SFB believes it's crucial that we don't tell our teenagers how to ask, but help them have the skills to make their own decisions, plan for their future, and be accountable for their actions.

ACVB is a grassroots community effort to establish a community sports project that connects families with the community through youth development activities such as basketball and it’s C.A.R.E. Program (Community Advantage Resource Engagement).  Parts of the C.A.R.E. program comprises of STREM (Science, Technology, Robotics, Engineering, and Mathematics) and athletics. The program exposes youth to an array of opportunities that are fundamental for their future and areas of interest beyond what they are previewed in their daily lives. For example, through our production partnership, youths learn the art of journalism, marketing, financial literacy, advertising, research, communication, etc. Additionally, youths participate in our youth academic program taught by young and innovative professional instructors to cover the areas of computer science, technology, finance, health,  and engineering.
